Pleasure Dome and Trinity Square Video are pleased to present a newly commissioned video by Bear Witness, that will premiere as part of the media arts works screened in the Cinesphere at Ontario Place, a component of in / FUTURE, an eleven-day immersive celebration of multidisciplinary contemporary art and world music located on the West Island of Ontario Place, presented by Art Spin in partnership with Small World Music and Ontario Place. Bear Witness has often tasked his work with the duty of claiming space for Indigenous people on the urban landscape of North America, Bear’s new video, titled The Place, continues this mission. As an iconic landmark for his years growing up in downtown Toronto in the 1980s and 90s, Witness seeks to not only take over the physical space of Ontario Place with his video intervention, but to interact with the content being screened with his work. Using the NFB film made for Expo ’67 In the Labyrinth as the back drop for his video remix, Bear then calls upon his host of Hollywood Indians to help him reclaim “the place”.
A founding member of A Tribe Called Red and The NDN Talent Collective, Ehren Thomas aka Bear Witness, produces experimental video installation and screen works, as well as audio installation, video editing and video production. He is the recipient of four APCMA’s, a Juno Award and the Emerging Artist Award from the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival. He exhibited his solo show The Only Good NDN at the Sydney Festival in Australia. His video work has screened at prestigious film festivals around the world including Oberhasuen, Berlinale, and Rotterdam.
