Part of Fall 2004

A co-presentation with Mercer Union

Emily Vey Duke & Cooper Battersby have been blurring categories so idiosyncratically for the last six years that their peculiar mode of synthesis has practically become a brand in itself. Comprised of diverse and tangential episodes, veering between humour and pathos, each of their videos achieves an emotional response like a cryptic pop song.

This survey of their video work to date will provide a wider view into their world &lrquo;” one in which disaffected robots rub shoulders with talking and (highly literate) animals, thermodynamic laws share the podium with sexual ennui, and oh-so-ironic aphorisms are rendered sincere via heartfelt melody.

Opening the programme will be the Canadian premiere of their latest work The New Freedom Founders, a musical video-art science-fiction trilogy presented as a triptych three-screen projection.

Mercer Union will be presenting Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby’s Curious About Existence (2003) in the Back Gallery from October 21 to November 27, 2004 Opening Reception: Thursday, October 21, 8 pm, 37 Lisgar Street.
