Part of Winter 2011
This program of film and video celebrates the transformation that entropy initiates and the aesthetic pleasures of anarchic decomposition and destruction. The second law of thermodynamics, frequently called the law of increased entropy, guarantees the gradual disintegration of all matter. This destructive process has long aroused a gloomy reminder of how impermanence and mortality are hardwired into nature — but entropy is also a promise of change and renewal, signaling the universe’s tendency towards chaos and the absolution of organizing structures. Works include: Breakfast (Table Top Dolly), Michael Snow; Puna Virama, Ujjwal Utkarsh; tba, Michel Klöfkorn; Self Portrait Post Mortem, Louise Bourque; Ville Marie, Alexandre Larose; and Rostrum Press: Materials Testing, Chris Gehman.
