Composthumanism

Part of Winter 2019

Composthumanism presents new moving image works about life on earth – studies in natural and built environments, overgrown industrial landscapes, ritual immersion, organic materials, processing, and decay. Anxiety about environmental change and loss is affecting so many now, it has earned a new entry in psychology manuals. Antidotes include forest bathing, gardening, interspecies bonding and working on ecology projects with others. Communities are taking direct action to defend the environment from rampant consumption of resources. Film and media artists are getting their hands dirty, challenging themselves and audiences to examine the muck that gives life and to which we return. We are all compost, writes Donna Haraway. In this program of local, Canadian and international shorts followed by a prize-winning experimental feature, a non-Edenic world replete with possibility emerges from underground.
